IN OUTRAGEOUS PLACES
What's the most outrageous or exciting place where you've ever had sex?
The subject of sex in public or semi-public places is a touchy one. Why does sex in such situations so horrify "straights", so embarass gay spokesmen and, at the same time, fail completely to interest most lesbians?
Irrational Fear.
What is the source of the peculiar horror that the thought, of guys making it together in public view, seems to have for many "straights?" It is obviously not a rational fear. Any objective consideration would show that such a sight cannot conceivably have any harmful effects, beyond causing a brief feeling of distaste in an unsympathetic viewer. If the sight of two guys getting it on together could turn a heterosexual into

a
homosexual, then why does the sight of a man and woman making love not have the opposite effect on homosexuals? Rationality, of course, is not a trait usually associated with homophobia. A Political Act
There are, I think, two reasons for this intense irrational fear. First, having sex in a public place is seen as a political actcorrectly so. For many gay men it is an act of defiance. It is a way of thumbing one's nose at a persecuting society and its vicious rules. It is a kind of desecration of the idols, in the temple of heterosexual tyranny. The sexual thrill from an encounter in such a place passes in minutes and is quite forgotten in hours, but the intellectual satisfaction arising from such a defiance of society's rules can last for years.

Sex in a public place is a symbolic act. This political aspect of sex has the power to arouse intense exhilaration and to create lifelong feelings of satisfaction in the person who perpetrates the act, and likewise o evoke passionate hostility in the unsympathetic onlooker. Repressed Straights
It is by now a cliche that our most vociferous persecutors are heterosexuals who have mental problems with their own sexuality. Their greatest unvoiced fear is that they will lose control of the homosexual element which they have tried to repress in their own minds. Nothing, of course, would be more likely to turn on these repressed homosexual feelings more than seeing a couple of groovy guys going at it. Gay Leaders
will readily jump up to attack the myth that homosexuals molest children, often seem rather uncomfortable when the topic is raised of sex in semi-public places. In his recent, widely acclaimed book, "The Homosexual Matrix," Dr. C.A. Tripp says: "Most homosexuals themselves share the public's sentiments against on-the-spo sex; not even the homophil organizations have a kind word for it."

Even heterosexuals condemned (and sometimes prosecuted) for having sex in exposed places, The gay leader who spoke out for treating public sex acts by homosexuals as, at most, a minor nuisance, less harmful than littering, would be put in the position of appearing to demand for homosexuals a tolerance which is, in theory, not even extended to the persecuting majority.
It is this strategic risk which causes gay leaders to avoid a direct attack on this problem. Most, wisely, prefer to attack police entrapment policies. The war against entrapment is one that can be won in the foreseeable future. Irrational hostility, however, has been around for a couple of thousand years, and may take as long to vanquish.
Independence
In the nature of their sexuality, men and women are quite different...not just lesbians, all women. This is a truth which probably extends beyond sex cultural and learned differences to reflect basic biological differences.
to traditional inferior roles. Because of this reactionary taint. on the idea of sex differences, most enlightened people are inclined to minimize thoughts about differences between men and women. In regard to male and female homosexuality this is a mistake. Except for our preferences in sexual partners, we gay people do not differ much in our sexuality from the rest of the population. Where we do differ it is largely because we display a purer. clearer expression of our essential male
or
female sexuality. Sex behavior between persons oʻ opposite sex must inevitably be a compromise between their different sexual needs and characters. Sex between two women (or men) constitutes an uncompromised expression of their real female (or male) sexual needs and desires.
A future essay, "Why the Tearoom instead of the Bedroom?" will discuss why this kind of sex is so attractive and what sexual needs it fulfills. After explaining why so many I gay men get satisfaction in this way I would like to return to question with which I began this piece, "What's the most outrageous or exciting place where you've ever had sex?" Write and tell me your own response to this question. The most interesting replies will be outlined, anonymously of course, in a later article. Has anyone ever done it on Ralph Perk's desk?
Differences between the sexes are out of fashion. They are usually emphasized only by reactionary sexists trying to justify the assignment of women THE VAULTS PROUDLY PRESENTS
